Dear Patients,
We have recently conducted a general review of your medications. As part of this review, we want to ensure your health and well-being by advising you on the importance of protecting your stomach while taking certain medications.
Why Gastroprotection is Important
Medications such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen, and Aspirin are classified as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). While effective for pain relief, these medications can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues, including ulcers and bleeding.
Recommended Action
To help protect your stomach, we recommend considering a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI). PPIs reduce stomach acid production, providing a protective effect against the irritation caused by NSAIDs.
NHS Guidance on NSAIDs and PPIs:
- Assess Risk Factors: If you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, are over 65, or are taking multiple medications that increase gastrointestinal risk, you may need gastroprotection.
- PPI Recommendations: Common PPIs include Omeprazole and Lansoprazole. These should be taken at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
One of our prescribers may have been in touch and advised you about prescribing Omeprazole or Lansoprazole.
